Copier Salesman Makes A Watch Sale?
The following is a rant from KTTB about the WSJ article “The Art of Selling An Expensive Watch”:
So when do copier salesmen instruct those of us that really sell watches? I hate comparative salesmanship! ” It is like a casino, they treat their clients to this and that”! ”They feel special” cliche after cliche, I could serve bologna slices and Hi-C and it would not make my customer less likely to buy the watch they really want! Product knowledge, standing behind the product, and simply having the right goods to sell is half the battle. Watch guys like just that, watches – talking about the watch, learning about the movement, all things watch related! If you are a Fluff salesman, stick to Fluff! Don’t go selling the great taste of Peanut butter!
Trading Down?
Have you ever traded a fine timepiece for several watches you thought would give you a better collection and or vice-versa. Being in the watch game for quite some time I have had clients that have done both with much happiness.
There is no harm in cashing all your chips sometimes to try a new route in collecting. So if you get the urge, try it out, get a collection of Seiko’s for a Rolex or trade your Girard Perregaux for 5 or 6 lessor model watches. Have fun with collecting don’t be too serious, few in this game are real money makers, so take some chances. KTTB
U-Crazy?

Apparently U-Boat has brought out a limited edition watch that was created (in design many years ago for the Italian Navy) by Italo Fontana’s grandfather’s watch company! They plan to have this watch at $40,000 dollars retail. Here is the skinny….
Titanium case and bezel; brass dial; steel charge axis, crown, stop crown lever, stop glass handles, bezel runners, quarters pointers, 5 minutes pointers and strap pivots; German silver hands; case thickness is 18.5 mm; height is 21.8 mm; maximum width is 69.5 mm; water resistant to 400 meters; power reserve is 46 hours; movement is mechanical, hand-winding with 17 rubies; oversized strap is brown “shell cordovan” leather with large titanium buckle. Before final assembly, each watch is assembled without movement or dial and put in an autoclave under 40 bar pressure to verify the press resistance and ermeticity. Sounds like a Unitas movement? WOW. That is a boat load of money! KTTB
Consume Or Collect?
So you just picked up a new watch, wore it for about 2 weeks and then…..”Flipper Phobia”. The sudden urge to trade a watch just shortly after receiving it! The American consumer is a machine programmed to purchase and purge what it seeks. I have had short battles with this bug, always coming to my senses. Learn to enjoy the watches you have, because the next Phobia to strike will be, why did I let it go! Be a collector not a consumer! KTTB
